PRESIDENTS
MESSAGE
Thank you to all the members who
volunteered their time and effort to the success of the Passion
for Life BBQ on Saturday. We did make money and had a very enjoyable
social evening, with some members dancing to the music they had
heard over the years. Robin Logan does the best impression of a
guitarist without a guitar I have ever seen!
This Friday there is no meeting
at the Hilton . We are having a Vocational visit to the TAAFE and
it is 12.30pm seated for lunch that will conclude at 2pm. We would
like Rotarians to sit at tables with the school children and teachers.
This will be to mix up people to tell what Rotary is about, and
for us to talk to the children and teachers to find out what they
are doing.
There is a Centennial Twin Club
Project that clubs can participate in. There needs to be compatability
in projects and other criteria. If anyone would like to look at
this project it is on the web site www.rotary.org/centennial/activities.
We would like to officially welcom
Mr. David Young into our club. David has attended many lunches with
us and now even has one of our Rotary shirts.
Mr. Peter Lade has resigned from
the club, his work commitments and Life Saving he finds no time
with a young family to be envolved with Rotary. Our membership at
present with our club is 38 members. We need more!
Some members may have some people
or ideas they might like to share at our next meeting.
This Saturday at the Balaclava School
Gina is organizing with our Club to have a BBQ for the parents and
friends attending a working bee. It is only for two hours, so if
anyone can help, please let Gina know.
Melbourne cup day we are having
a Rotary table at the Hilton .It starts at 11.30am and concluded
at 3.30pm. Will be a wonderful day. the cost is $55 per head . Peter
Roggenkamp will be our host for the day. It is Tuesday 4 November,
write down that date.

Letter From Rebecca
Bryant
12th October 2003
Hello to everyone at Cairns Mulgrave Rotary Club.
I just wanted to say a quick hello to everyone
and to let you know that I have been doing over the last few months.
I have also been asked to send greeting from my Norwegian Rotary
Club (Bodo Morkeved Club). I have changed schools as from August.
I am now at Bodin, completing the final year sports
class and I am finding it truly amazing. I have met lots of new
people and as a whole they are a lot more positive and welcoming
than my first class. The teachers are very good and are determined
to get my Norwegian language skills up to standard.
So while the extra pressure is a little daunting
it is working as I have been sitting Norwegian exams and succeeding
which is a welcome relief.
I have just moved to the Solviegs (my new family)
who live very close to the city, which make life a little easier,
it also saves me quite a lot of money on bus fares. Solvieg was
an exchange student in Australia last year (in Townsville). We get
along really well and I seem to fit into the family well. We understand
each other as we have been through similar experiences.
I have made some great friends and now realise
just how heartbreaking it will be to say goodbye. I missed the final
meeting with the other exchange students as my Grandparents were
visiting from Australia. That was really sad but couldn't be helped.
However, the good news is that most of us are on
the same flight home, which will make leaving a lot easier and the
horrible flight more bearable.
As I said before, my grandparents were here in mid
September and had the most amazing time. We went on the Norwegian
coastal cruise and visited Bergen (I am in love with that city,
it is really something special). We also visited many museums, art
galleries and other interesting places. However it's now back to
reality and schoolwork. I have been so busy lately I haven't had
much time to think.
So all in all things have been very enjoyable and
educational, but I still can't wait to come home. A year is a long
time!!!!!! I also realise that I will regret having to end what
has been an unforgettable experience.
Thank you for this opportunity and for your support.
Hilsen (Regards)
Rebecca Bryant.
Passion For Life
Concert
Thank you everyone for your support last night at
the Passion For Life concert.
Final tally - we got about 2000 people through the
gate - all of them in the Brothers Leagues site I think! It was
a huge success - with amazing comments from people and sponsors
all night - especially at the end.
Everyone wanted to know when the next one is going
to be. We can't be happier - hope the club did well out of the evening.
Hopefully life will take on some sort of normality
now - and I might even be able to return to Rotary on a Friday!
Thanks again for your help
Sandy
Balaclava Barbecue
Hi Fellow Rotarians
Now that we have the BBQ groove happening - I'm
looking for volunteers for Saturday lunchtime. 12.00 - 2pm is probably
all we need to do.
Thanks to Robin & Margaret who have already put
their names down.
Looking forward to hearing from a few more.
Big thank you
Gina
About PolioPlus
In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program
to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences
of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world
to eradicate polio.
Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner
agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations
Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a
99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.
Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory
and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio
in 2005, the organization's centennial year.
In 1985, Rotary launched
PolioPlus, one of the most ambitious humanitarian programs ever
undertaken by a private-sector organization. PolioPlus was the catalyst
for the World Health Assembly's resolution in 1988 to eradicate
polio.
Today, thanks to Rotary's commitment and its leadership
in mobilizing volunteers, the world is on the threshold of eradicating
the poliovirus. Great progress has been made. Seven countries remain
polio endemic. The number of cases worldwide has decreased 99 percent
since 1985.
The greatest obstacle to victory is adequate funding:
a $275 million shortfall must be overcome in the period 2002-05.
For this reason, the RI Board of Directors and the Trustees of The
Rotary Foundation unanimously decided to launch a one-year campaign
to help fill the funding gap, seeking $80 million in cash and pledges
during the period 1 July 2002 through 30 June 2003 (with pledges
to be paid over a three-year period).
Rotary Raises US$88.5 Million, Exceeding Campaign
Goal
On 3 June 2003, at the Rotary International Convention
in Brisbane, Australia, RI President Bhichai Rattakul announced
that Rotary's 1.2 million members have successfully raised more
than US$88.5 million for the fundraising campaign, surpassing the
original goal of $80 million.
The funds raised are in addition to the $500 million
Rotary has committed to polio eradication since 1985, when Rotary
launched its first fundraising drive with the goal of $120 million
- an amount that Rotary more than doubled by the end of that campaign.
The remarkable success of the current campaign would
not have been possible without the enthusiasm and support of more
than 5,000 clubs who have sent their commitments.
Additional pledges and club commitments are arriving
daily. So far, 528 districts and 117 countries have supported the
campaign. It is not too late for you or your club to participate
in the campaign.
Unfortunate Pick
Up Lines
"Excuse me, I'm a little short of cash. Would
you mind if we shared a cab home?"
"I may not be the best looking guy here, but
I'm the only one talking to you."
"You like my name? You should hear my phone number."
"I've had quite a bit to drink, and you're beginning
to look really good."
"If you're going to regret this in the morning,
we can sleep until the afternoon."
