Hi all
We will be having Rotary lunch on Friday
3 October at the Emergency Centre/Ambulance on Anderson Street at
12.30pm.
Now I know I'm getting in early but
as I'll be away for the next couple of weeks (Longreach) I would
really appreciate you letting me know if you'll be there for this
special Vocational lunch. This way I'll ensure we have plenty of
food for lunch.
Please bring along family and friends
as this is a great opportunity that not too many people get the
chance to do. Adults $20/children $12
Please reply via email with your numbers
or tick off the sheet that Sandy has on Friday when we have lunch
at the Balaclava.
Thanks Gina
Sexual
Harassment and Youth Exchange
From The DG's Newsletter The October
orientations are fast approaching. Clubs are asked to remind their
students (inbounds and outbounds) that attendance is compulsory.
(October 3,4 & 5 at The Cathedral School in Townsville).
It would be great to see a large roll
up of club International Service Directors and Presidents at the
weekend.
The recent media coverage to the YE
program on the ABC Radio has brought a lot of publicity to Rotary
and the Youth Exchange program. Our District has been proactive
in the past few years in making our students, parents and clubs
aware of the issue.
The former Chairman of the YE Program
(PDG Jeff Crofts) imitated a number of measures, including:-
· Introduced the Declaration of Suitability
of Host Parents form a few years ago. Now superseded by (Qld) Law.
· Included Sexual Harassment session in past 3 orientations. Make
students and parents aware that statistically 1% of all exchanges
will suffer some form of sexual abuse.
With 500 inbound students and 500 outbound
students per year in the Australian YE Program, statistically, this
equates to 5 inbound students and 5 outbound students in the Australian
program. We make the point at orientation (repeatedly) - if it doesn't
feel right it is not right - speak up and tell us and we will listen.
· Terminated exchange with a district because we weren't[ happy
with the response from that district on a sexual harassment complaint.
· Committee for sexual harassment
in District YE program includes DG/YE Chair/Senior Police Officer
(Tony Goddard - YE Secretary).
· Draft policy of sexual harassment
(prevention/recognition/response). Currently being worked on by
PDG Jeff Crofts to be presented at orientation in association with
normal Sexual Harassment briefing for students and parents.
We view the publicity as positive
as it will focus the attention of parents and students and Rotary
on this issue.
A man walks
into a dentist's surgery and says "Excuse
me, can you help me. I think I'm a moth."
Dentist: "You don't need a dentist,
you need a psychiatrist."
Man "Yes, I know."
Dentist: "So why did you come in here?"
Man: "The light was on."
You know, somebody actually complemented
me on my driving today.
They left a little note on the windscreen:
It said "Parking Fine." So that was nice.
Once upon a time, a perfect man
and a perfect woman met.
After A perfect courtship, they had
a perfect wedding. Their life together was, of course, perfect.
One snowy, stormy Christmas Eve, this perfect couple was Driving
their perfect car along a winding road, when they noticed someone
at the side of the road in distress. Being the perfect couple, they
stopped to help.
There stood Santa Claus with a huge
bundle of toys. Not wanting to disappoint any children on the eve
of Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and his toys into
their vehicle. Soon they were driving along delivering the toys.
Unfortunately, the driving conditions
deteriorated and the Perfect couple and Santa Claus had an accident.
Only one of them survived the accident.
Question: Who was the survivor?
Answer: The perfect woman survived.
She's the only one who really existed in the first place. Everyone
knows there is no Santa Claus and there is no such thing as a perfect
man.
**** Women stop reading here, that
is the end of the joke. **** Men keep reading.
So, if there is no perfect man and
no Santa Claus, the Woman must have been driving. This explains
why there was a car accident
For Men
By the way, if you're a woman and you're
still reading, This illustrates another point: Women never listen.
Katherine
Saw Youth In Need
When the Rotary club of Katherine N.T.
identified a lack of incentive for the young people of Katherine
it decided to act.
The club of 16 members floated the
idea of Young People’s Awards about the town and soon excellent
support came from both businesses and the local community. Sponsorship
came from diverse businesses.
All of the entrants were supported
by their parents with many parents accompanying the entrants at
the award presentation held at Knotts Crossing Resort. Major awards
were the The Indigenous Trainee of the Year, Apprentice of the Year
and Vocational In School Trainee of the year. Winners received prizes
of $A500.
Katherine has four main industries
in the Royal Australian Air Force establishment at Tindal, Aboriginal
services, cattle raising and tourism. The town is set on the edge
of the tropical area of the Top End, being the last major town after
leaving Darwin on the way south to Alice Springs. The RAAF Base
supplied the fighter squadron that recently returned from duty in
the Gulf.
The Gorge, 20 km north of the town,
is often used in tourism promotions for the Top End. The Darwin
to Alice railway running through Katherine is nearing completion..
Another Rotary project in Katherine
is construction of a family fun park comprising 18 holes of mini-golf,
life size chess, snakes and ladders, mallet pool, skittles, a barbecue
area and a kiosk.
