Letter From The District Governor
Welcome to the new Rotary year and to the first
Rotary theme in years that has articulated a spirit that we, as
Australians, can easily relate to.
Lend a hand is about as Australian as kangaroos
and the slouch hat. It's about helping out a mate, sharing a beer
on a hot day and building a better community. It's what we are here
for. In keeping with our hands on, full throttled, approach we have
gathered together a formidable editorial and leadership team, many
of whom have taken an oath of celibacy for the coming year in order
to sharpen their cerebral focus. When you see them, particularly
later in the year, it will be obvious to you who they are. Something
about the eyes.
While on that theme, I wish to acknowledge Past
District Governor Jeff, his wife Gloria and the whole 2002-2003
team for their hard work; culminating in the excellent state of
the District at the end of their year. They have done a great job
and indeed shifted the bar up a notch for all of those who follow.
Our aim, this year, is to use the newsletter as
a vehicle for sharing information on a range of issues including
advertising upcoming events, informing clubs of the successes of
others, sharing items of interest with respect to the District and
keeping you up to date with attendance and other records. Gov We
also hope that, through the newsletter, we can share some of our
lighter moments as we struggle to provide sensible leadership across
all 53 clubs within our 1.6 million square kilometer area spanning
two countries, two states and about 26 different cultures.
If you find the challenge of working with like
minded professionals to achieve the common goal of human advancement
is progressively causing you to scream and tear your hair out, then
drop a line to our editor, Martyn. It may not help you at all. But,
when shared, it may be just the laugh others in our District need.
You will note that July is Literacy Month and it
is of particular significance this year as our RI President Jonathon
Majiyagbe has made it a world priority and established a Literacy
and Education Task Force to encourage and assist Rotary clubs and
districts to develop programs which provide:
· literacy training, specially for women;
· mentoring of young people;
· support for community schools;
· educational opportunities for low income persons;
and
· vocational training or mentoring for prison inmates.
Programs which aim to achieve these objectives can
be carried out in your local community as well as overseas and I
urge you to consider these when determining your club's program
for the coming year. Please remember, if you find this news letter
a tad dull, I challenge you to keep it a secret from your fellows
for as long as you can. Mike Rennie

Mareeba Club
sold 300 Salad rolls compared with 470 pies
out of a total of 6,570 food items washed down with 5000 bottles

A very successful event from all accounts.

Last night as I lay sleeping
I died or so it seemed,
Then I went to heaven
But only in my dream
Up there St Peter met me
Standing at the pearly gate,
He said "I must check your record
Please stand here and wait."
He turned and said "Your record Is covered with
terrible flaws,
On earth I see you rallied For every losing cause."
I see that you drank alcohol And smoked and used drugs too,
Fact is, you've done everything A good person should never do.
We can't have people like you up here
Your life was full of sin,
Then he read the last of my record
Took my hand and said "Come in."
He lead me up to the big boss and said
"Take him in and treat him well",
He used to work in Dentistry
He's done his time in hell".
