A Message From
The R.I. President
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
The end of this Rotary year has now arrived, and
it is time to say goodbye, it has been my honour and privilege to
serve as president of this great organisation that is son close
to my heart.
This experience has been the culmination of my 45
years as a Rotarian. Charoye and I have enjoyed the opportunity
to meet so many Rotarians who are truly making a difference in their
own communities and those around the world. We have been deeply
moved and inspired by their dedication and commitment to the rotary
motto of Service Above Self.
As I reflect on the past year, I am flooded with
memories of individual Rotarians who have shown so much compassion.
I remember their outstretched hands, their ready smiles, their acts
of kindness.
I remember even more vividly those who benefited
from that kindness. I remember the tears and hope in their eyes
and their renewed faith in the future. In a time of uncertainty
and upheaval, Rotarians have risen to their challenge of creating
a better world.
We have not let war, political instabilities or
economic hardships obscure our vision. We remain steadfast on the
path to peace by providing humanitarian assistance and promoting
tolerance and international understanding. I strongly believe that
Rotary is a vehicle for grassroots diplomacy and uniting people
of different cultures and beliefs.
Rather than being overwhelmed by the world's problems,
Rotations are ready to respond wholeheartedly and without hesitation.
We have enthusiastically sponsored new community service projects,
conducted health programs, raised funds for polio eradication, promoted
educational initiatives and supported the new Rotary Centers for
International studies in peace and conflict resolution.
Today's challenges have reignited our passion for
Rotary and renewed our sense of mission. I have never been prouder
to be a Rotarian. Every person we encounter has a chance for a better
life. We must continue to find the courage to make a difference.
I have no doubt that as we enter the new Rotary
year, we will be ready to take on anew challenges and touch new
lives. I am very please to pass the torch of service to our new
leader, Jonathan Majiyagbe, our first president from Africa. It
is with great pride that I welcome our incoming president and embrace
the 2003-2004 theme of Lend a Hand.
I cannot think of a more appropriate theme as we
approach Rotary's centennial in 2005 and continue to build on our
tradition of meaningful service. As this year draws to a close,
Charoye and I would live to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation
to all Rotarians and their families.
We will miss you all very much. As Rotary moves
forward, let us continue to Sow the Seeds of Love as we Lend a Hand.
God bless you. God Bless Rotary.
Bhichai Rattakul Presiden R.I.
30 New Rotaract
Clubs
Here is a challenge to all Rotary Clubs.
It is my belief that in the next 12 months we could
commence 30 new Rotaract clubs across the countries of our two zones.
I'm thinking specially of New Zealand, the Philippines, Australia
Fiji and Papua New Guinea. There may be other areas and these would
be a bonus.
How will we go about this effort to attract maybe
600 new Rotaractors into membership? Firstly, each club situated
near a university or college of higher learning (an institution
beyond secondary schooling) could sponsor a Rotaract club.
A working party from the club could contact other
clubs in the District and find out who from their area is attending
this facility - this means children of Rotarians (and grand-children),
children of friends and neighbours, former Exchange Students, former
science Summer Forum attendees and similar summer programs, former
RYLA, RYPEN and MUNA students.
In addition, may clubs have sponsored specific
youngsters in fourth and fifth year of study. Each District Governor
is a key, as he or she needs to personally endorse this activity.
The sponsor club can compile a significant list and then begin working
with key students. In some universities, the Student Union assists
in setting up new clubs.
The outcome? A successful club will give the students
involved extra support from a group of people who really care. It
will give them opportunity for leadership and service and it will
spread the message of Rotary's positive living as we Sow The Seeds
Of Love.
I would be very keen to hear from Rotarians who
take up this challenge and then follow the progress of each new
Rotaract club.

Business Directory
for Rotarians:
The Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak, N.S.W
(D9650) is expanding its Business to Business Directory.
Rotarian John Townsend advised the directory was
set up for Rotarians but the club has decided that non-Rotarians
committed to the principles of The 4 Way Test may also submit a
listing, provided they are sponsored by another Rotarian or Rotary
club.
The directory is online at http://www.rotariansb2b.com
Funds raised will support the Polio Eradication
Campaign. John Townsend said features would be added to the directory
during the year which will ensure it becomes a valuable resource
for Rotarians and their communities. Further information Phone (02)

School Aid for
Bangladesh
High school students in Dakshinduhuru Bangladesh,
now enjoy improved library resources because of the generosity of
the Rotary Club of Mount Eliza, Vic. (D9820) and the resources of
The Rotary Foundation.
The project was initiated when the club became aware
that the school had no library facilities, nor equipment for teaching
science. Mount Eliza contributed $A4, 000 to the project and this
amount was matched by the Rotary Foundation to allow purchase of
a computer, support equipment, furniture and library books.
