Our Coming Convention

What an exciting time for Rotary clubs and Rotarians down under…

At the end of May, the 94th annual Convention of Rotary International will be held in Brisbane, Qld., and we will have the opportunity to host Rotary friends from all over the world. At the time of writing, reports indicated that more than 17,000 had registered for Rotary's most important annual event and there is little doubt that, come June 1, the final figure will be at least 19, 000 to 20,000 Rotarians, partners and friends.

Congratulations to the Convention Chairman, Past R.I. Director John Carrick, and all of those wonderful men and women who have worked so hard to make this a memorable R.I. Convention. Special praise to those magnificent Queenslanders on the Host Committee, brilliantly led by John Puttick and John Blake.

World events in recent times have not made their tasks any easier, but their excellence in organisation has guaranteed success of the Convention and that is the only reward they seek. And let's not forget the R.I. staff who work so quietly and efficiently behind the scenes, year after year, to make these major events happen.

Fittingly, the efforts of all these wonderful people will ensure that the 2003 Convention will be a suitable tribute to one or the greatest Rotary leaders of all time - Bhichai Rattakul!

As a Rotarian who has been privileged to take part in many R.I. Conventions in the past two decades, I will make one special prediction …… those who make the effort to attend the Brisbane staging will have been to one of the all time great R.I. Conventions and that the Brisbane Convention Centre and South Bank venue will be acclaimed as perhaps THE best R.I. Convention venue of all time!

So the message to ALL Rotarians down under - New Zealanders, Pacific Islanders and Australian - who have not planned to attend is that IT'S NOT TOO LATE. You will never have a better chance to taste the real internationality of Rotary - and there many not be another R.I. Convention in Australia for 20 years. DO IT TODAY …. REGISTER NOW.

Friends in Rotary

In my opinion, the major input Rotary has made to the world has been its stand on ethics in the business life of communities.

I recall not so long ago when, if a Rotarian was pointed out, then all would know that here was a person who stood for the highest levels of integrity in business, family and service in the community. We need to continue that interface with business as it fits with each community.

Many places will have to change - Paul Harris made just such an observation. We may need to identify high profile Rotarians and nudge them into representing our organisation a little more when being interviewed on television or in the boardroom, for instance. The simple practice of wearing our Rotary pin with pride at all times does make sense.

The lack of ethics in business does impact dramatically on each community. The lessons are legion from the past few years. This is apparent in government, big business and small.

Our 4 Way Test is meant entirely to be a personal measure, not one we hold against another's performance, but if we all give it a try we all benefit. I feel that the positive progress of the Corporate Alliance Program in both New Zealand and Australia is a sound way of interacting with businesses across both countries, and all other countries in our Zones, showing that we still believe in straight dealing, honest negotiations and service within our workplace as well as our home and community.

The R.I. Convention in Brisbane will be truly wonderful for all of us. Please say "hello" as you go by.

Did you know ...?

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.) (I'm still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Do not try this at home ...... maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. ("Honey, I'm home. What the ....?!")

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes ... lucky pig ... can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life ... quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm ........)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (OK, so that would be a good thing....)

A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??)
