MAY - DISTRICT
CONFERENCE MONTH
The beginning of May has been a busy period for
the District, with District Officer Training and PETS held on 1
& 2 May, and the Cairns District Conference on 2 to 4 May 2003.
Congratulations must go to DGE Mike Rennie and the
District training team for a rejuvenated approach to the training
sessions, involving a high level of interaction and participation.
The complaints from some from last year have been well and truly
addressed, making these vital sessions a must for club office bearers
in future years.
And congratulations certainly to Jim Spencer and
the Cairns Conference Committee, ably supported by the Combined
Cairns Clubs, for a magnificent District Conference.
The Conference commenced with the District's 32
Inbound YEP students bringing in the flags of their countries, before
the flag of Timor Leste was introduced for the first time to the
District to a standing ovation. After nurse Di Brookes spoke of
her experiences with polio immunisation in Kenya, Dr. Duane Gubler,
of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, provided an excellent
keynote address outlining the challenges of dengue fever.
Our GSE team from D2430, Turkey, then presented
a little of the culture of their own country, despite the surprise
appearance of a couple of belly dancers! Visiting speakers, Zone
Foundation Representative John Boag, ARHRF's Joy Gillett, Model
Club Co-ordinator Dick White, and RDU's Bob Aitken gave excellent
presentations on their respective Rotary subjects.
Our District Rotaract Representative and Ambassadorial
Scholars talked on the public perception of Rotary, before D3400
DGN Ritje Rihatinah from Bali, Indonesia, and Rotarians from Rotary
Club of Dili, Timor Leste, outlined the status of Rotary within
their regions.I also had the privilege to
formally present the R.I. "Service above Self" Award to PDG Arthur
Leinster.
The Cairns Convention Centre proved to be a superb
venue for the Conference and the social functions - Welcome Barbecue
at Cairns City Council, Partners Lunch at Cairns Hilton, DG's Dinner
at the Convention Centre, and Farewell Inlet Cruise on a Great Adventures
vessel - were opportunities for great fellowship.
A number of initiatives were trialled during the
Conference, including the memoriam session at the commencement and
the videoed "good news stories" at each break, both of which proved
to be successful. In accordance with the key aims of the Conference
Committee, all speakers were Rotarians, who freely and generously
donated their time to participate in the Conference on behalf of
the District and Rotary, and the Conference ran strictly to time.
I believe that we have shown that Rotarians are
interested in learning more about Rotary when it is presented by
committed and motivated presenters, of which there is certainly
no shortage in Rotary!
However, the Conference could not have been the
success that I believe it was without the input of R.I. President's
Representative, PDG David Ho and Elsie, from District 3300, Malaysia.
David and Elsie, in addition to bringing a deep Rotary knowledge
and experience on behalf of President Bhichai, also brought a great
warmth and friendliness that endeared them to all and we are indebted
for their contribution.
Those District Rotarians who attended the Conference
(and a maximum of 330 people attended the DG's Dinner) are certainly
the richer for the experience, and I trust that they will convey
that message to the many that didn't. Hopefully far more will gain
from that advice and make the effort to attend the Darwin Conference
in May 2004.
Again, my sincere thanks to all those who contributed
in so many ways to the District Officer's Training, PETS, and the
Conference itself.

District 9550, 2002-2003 "

we can do for others..."
Best Bulletin
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Townsville
Sunrise for the award of Best Bulletin in the District.
'The Sunbeam' was chosen by Scott Thompson - Editor
of the Cairns Post for the following reasons:
*Catchy name and graphically-pleasing front cover
(not too cluttered)
*The A5 format means it passes the "pinch-test" i.e. it has got
a bit of meat in it which gives the impression there is lots to
read.
*It is easy for the reader to navigate their way through:
On Page 2 you can easily find who's who - the club's
officebearers and then on Page 3 you find the minutes from the last
meeting. Page 4 is the President's Message which is concise (some
president's messages are way too long), the Members Directory is
conveniently placed in the back pages and the inside back cover
is the Object of Rotary and Four-Way Test.
*There is a good mix of Rotary International and
local club news.
*The ad layout is also very clean
*There is plenty of humour spread throughout the newsletter to lighten
it up, as well as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and even partner's
birthdays. This sends a message of unity and tradition.
*I liked the calendar of events and Meals on Wheels/Meeting Duty
Roster - everyone knows what's happening and when.
*The list of where to do make-ups in other towns is also a good
idea. Overall, a most enjoyable read!
