Brisbane Convention News

The Place To Be in 2003

Welcome to this edition of Brisbane Convention News. Registrations are coming in steadily as Rotarians take advantage of the early-bird savings. If you haven't registered then do so soon because the price rises after December.

In this edition we'll be telling you about the fantastic Convention Venue, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and how you can book your space in the House of Friendship. Just before next year's convention Brisbane will be hosting a RYLA Conference so we've included some information on this great RI program that had its start right here in Brisbane.

We are keen to make these newsletters interesting and informative so if you have any suggestions or stories please submit them to host@rotary2003.org. Happy reading and please help spread the word for Brisbane.

JOIN US IN PEACEFUL FELLOWSHIP

Recent events around the world have emphasised for us all the value of peace, friendship and fellowship in our world more highly than ever before. Australia is one of the safest and most culturally diverse countries in the world. Its history is one of peaceful assimilation of those from other cultures and more recently, reconciliation with its own indigenous population. There are few cultures elsewhere in the world not represented and peacefully coexisting here with us in Australia.

While recent events underscore that no country can completely guarantee against terrorism, fortunately Australia remains as one of the safest destinations in the world for a Rotary Convention. The 2003 Rotary International Convention brings together thousands of people of diverse cultures from around the globe.

In multi-cultural Brisbane, Rotarians will exemplify the uniting force of fellowship in Rotary service as we "Sow the Seeds of Love" in today's world. The Convention will also serve to highlight the great things that are achieved when hands of friendship are extended across borders and humanity unites to better the condition of all. We here in Brisbane look forward to linking hands with all of our visitors in a spirit of love, fellowship and hope.

FOCUS ON OUR VENUE

THE BRISBANE CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE

One success factor for a great Convention is the choice of venue and Brisbane 2003 is off to a flying start. The venue for the RI Convention next year is the award winning Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, one of the largest fully integrated exhibition and meeting facilities in the Southern Hemisphere.

Its Southbank location is in the heart of the cultural, entertainment and resort precinct and is a major attraction for visitors offering a gala atmosphere. The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre is conveniently located on the river opposite downtown Brisbane, with its stylish restaurants, al fresco cafes, international class shopping and leading hotels and nightspots.

Boasting 20,000 square metres of space, the Convention Centre caters for the whole Convention under one roof and has direct access to Southbank parkland for relaxation and entertainment. The Centre's much applauded food & beverage is available throughout the building, catering for silver service banquets, cocktail parties, lunches, gala dinners and all manner of general dining. Merivales Café Bar in the main foyer of the Convention Centre serves those wanting to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee or to catch up with friends over lunch from the á la carte menu.

The Centre's spectacular riverfront venue, the Southbank River Room is a five-minute walk. With sweeping views of the city skyline and the Brisbane river, the River Room is available during the Convention for private dining. Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre is fortunate to be located in one of the world's most desirable conference destinations. With warm winter days in the low 20ºs C Brisbane is beautiful one day and perfect the next. And some of the world's great natural attractions are within a one-hour plane ride.

REGISTRATION - WHAT YOU GET

Registrations for Brisbane are flowing in steadily. We now have 3,500 confirmed. When you register for Brisbane you are getting a great value deal. Your registration fee gives you access to all plenary sessions, workshops and the gala entertainment sessions of the Convention together with invitations to special host functions (some at no additional charge - look for more details in future bulletins).

Your registration also secures you a range of other goodies. On arrival you will be given a hospitality bag full of information to help make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Along with the official convention program you'll receive maps, transport information and some souvenirs to take home.

You will also receive your Brisbane Passport, an innovation from the Host Organisation which has information about Brisbane together with discount vouchers and special offers from local retailers, food outlets and attractions. Your registration provides free transportation for delegates on Brisbane's public buses, trains and ferries - another bonus negotiated by the Host Organisation to make your stay nice and easy.

And if you register now - you will be saving yourself dollars that can be better spent on good times in warm and sunny Queensland. Registration and housing forms are available through Rotary International publications and from the Host Organisation website at www.rotary2003.org

COME ON INTO THE HOUSE OF FRIENDSHIP

The House of Friendship is an exciting showcase of Rotary programs and projects combined with displays of quality Australian products aimed at giving Rotarians a unique Australian experience while visiting the Convention. The House of Friendship is also the meeting place for delegates and provides access to a wide variety of information on our culture, our business environment, our event sponsors plus a plethora of holiday opportunities.

There will also be a range of business services available. The House of Friendship facilities allow delegates to enjoy the company of fellow Rotarians while attending the Convention all under one roof. Conference delegates will spend much time in the House of Friendship relaxing, sharing a drink or a bite to eat with friends and taking in the lively entertainment.

The House of Friendship will be more than just a showcase; it will be the hub of the Convention. The showcase offers a unique opportunity for organisations and projects to reach out to the thousands of Rotarians expected from Australia and around the world, most of who are leaders in their own field of business or community activity.

The House of Friendship will be one of the highlights of the Convention so if you are considering taking display space you are urged to book it now. Booth space can be booked by contacting:

REGISTER NOW FOR RYLA CONFERENCE - MAY 2003

The Rotary Club of Brisbane as the host Club of the 2003 Rotary International Convention also instigated RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) for Rotary in 1959. To acknowledge it's Australian beginnings, there will be a RYLA Conference in the week immediately preceding the Convention in Brisbane in May 2003.

RYLA awards:
· Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
· Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders · Encourage leadership of youth by youth
· Recognise publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities. Since it became an official program of Rotary International in 1971, RYLA has assisted thousands of young people to develop leadership skills at camps, seminars and workshops.

Most Rotary districts in the world now sponsor the program directed by District committees who adapt the RYLA program to suit local needs. Development of future leaders is more important than ever. Each District Governor is encouraged to nominate one or more RYLArians to attend as well as an experienced Rotarian RYLA leader to participate and share their experiences.

The registration period expires on November 30th, 2002. Application forms can be obtained from Rotary International at hansonc@rotaryintl.org , or at the RYLA website www.rotaryryla.com or by writing to Abraham Gordon Chairman of the RYLA Committee at gordonai@prodigy.net G'day and have a nice stay in Brisbane!

Single Blonde Female seeks male companionship

Ethnicity unimportant. I'm a very good-looking girl who LOVES to play. I love long walks in the woods, riding in your ute, hunting, camping and fishing trips, cosy winter nights lying by the fire.

Candlelight dinners will have me eating out our your hand. Rub me the right way and watch me respond. I'll be at the front door when you get home from work, wearing only what nature gave me. Kiss me and I'm yours.

Call xx-xxxxx and ask for Daisy.

Critical Morass

A major research institution has recently announced the discovery of the heaviest chemical element yet known to science.

The new element has been tentatively named "Governmentium". Governmentium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutron, 75 deputy neutrons and 11 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantitites of lepton-like particles called peons. Since governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected and it impedes very reaction with which it comes into contact.

A minute amount of governmentium causes one reaction to take over 4 days to complete where it would normally take less than a second. Governmentium has normal half-life of 3 years; it does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause some morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to speculate that governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration.

This hypothetical quantity is referred to as "Critical Morass". You will know it when you see it.
