PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

15TH NOVEMBER 2002

You may, or may not, have noticed that I have not produced a Presidents Message for the Club Bulleting for the past few weeks.

I feel that unless there is some event or significant issue that requires comment from the Club President, then there is not a lot to be gained by me religiously producing a Presidents Message every week that mostly re-states news and comment provided by other Club Directors and Members.

If anyone has a different view then I would be pleased to hear from them.

This week there are two very significant events that I believe are noteworthy for the Club and deserve some comment

- Ø Ted Elliott has informed me that Rupert "the legend" Crossland has come through his triple coronary by-pass surgery with flying colours and is recuperating well. Rupert is reportedly keen to return to his Rotary involvement as soon as his health allows.

On behalf of all of the Members of our Club and his Rotary family, I would extend to Rupert and June our very best wishes for Rupert's continued recovery to his former good health. We look forward to welcoming Rupert back to a Club meeting soon.

Ø I have received an e-mail from Herman Ehrlich regarding the final outcome of the Club's recently completed Rotary Community Art Union. The unaudited results indicate that at this stage the Club will achieve a financial "break-even" position following the tabulation of all ticket sales and funds received.

Not only has the Club directly injected in excess of $ 26000 into participating community groups in our community and provided one very deserving and grateful winner with a brand new motor car, but we have managed to come through the project without any additional costs to the Club.

Given that, at one stage, the Club was looking down the barrel of a deficit of some thousands of dollars, this outcome is nothing short of fantastic.

This wonderful outcome, both for our Club and for the positive impact on the community perception of the Rotary organization, is largely due to the extraordinary effort and commitment of Rtns Herman Ehrlich, John Quinn, David Kirchner, David Court and those members and Rotary partners who assisted in the sale of tickets in Cairns and Pt Douglas, collecting and collating of sold tickets and the general organization of such a huge project.

Our Club and Rotary in general owes these particular members a huge debt of gratitude, and on behalf of our Club I would take this opportunity to congratulate you all and thank you sincerely for your commitment to the work of Rotary, and for your dogged determination to see this project through to a successful conclusion.

You are all a credit to the Rotary Club of Cairns Mulgrave and stand as an example to some members of Rotary of what a bit of commitment and a positive outlook can achieve.

We will conduct a review of the Community Art Union at Board level with input from Herman and JQ, and given the successful outcome, both in this year and in the previous year, we may well consider undertaking the project again next year - albeit in a modified format. We will keep you all informed.

Anyone who cares to make an input into the review of the Community Art Union should feel free to do so.

Another very important and traditional community service project is now gaining momentum in the club and the community - that is of course the "Give a Damn Give a Can" Christmas Hamper Appeal.

I urge every member to take inspiration from the efforts of those involved in the Community Art Union and demonstrate a bit of commitment to the cause of Rotary by becoming actively involved in this very worthwhile community service project that assists those in our community who are not as fortunate as we are.

Remember you will receive as much from Rotary as you are willing to put into it. No matter how busy our business and family lives are, we all have some time that we can give to the community service that we acknowledge as being part of our Rotary membership obligations. Please see Sandy Astill or any member of the Club Board if you are willing to step up.

That's about it for this week.

See you all at the Hilton on Friday at 12.30pm - remember the parking arrangements. Take care of each other, and be sure to talk to someone about Rotary this week.

From the District Governor's Newsletter

NOVEMBER is ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH!

The Rotary Foundation is a vital component of Rotary's goal to bring peace and goodwill to the world.

It does this in many ways; by improving the health and living standards of our less fortunate neighbours; by improving literacy skills and breaking down the barriers of ignorance; and by programs such as Group Study Exchange to increase awareness and understanding of other cultures.

The Rotary Foundation is at the forefront of Rotary's humanitarian efforts in every country of the world. While most clubs naturally, and rightfully, are focused on the needs of their local communities, we should never forget the need for Rotarians and Rotary clubs to also support the work of Rotary internationally through ongoing and annual support of the Foundation.

To reinforce the message I have given to all Clubs and Rotarians during my official club visits, this District needs to improve its support for the Rotary Foundation. In addition to providing the essential funds for the continued support of the great work of the Foundation, increased contributions will ensure a more significant return of funds to the District as District Designated Funds (DDF) in three year's time.

This will bring an increased and welcome opportunity to the DG of the day to make a more effective use of DDF to fulfil the international aims and objectives of the District as perceived to be relevant at that time.

It has been extremely gratifying to receive such positive expressions of support for the Rotary Foundation, and for the Polio Eradication Campaign, from so many clubs during the course of the official club visits.

Given that to date there has been little concrete evidence of that support (ie donations received), it is to be hoped that clubs are actively reviewing their fund raising and financial priorities and that the level of support so generously promised will soon be a reality.

Remember that our District goal for the Rotary Foundation this year is an average of Aus $100 equivalent per member across the District, and Aus $150 for Polio Eradication (cash and pledges over 3 years).

While this remains a very significant contribution in difficult economic times for many of our communities, it is perhaps more achievable when considered in terms of $2 and $3 per week per member. And unlike many other international aid programs, every cent of every dollar donated is effectively used for the purpose for which it was donated.

º º º º º Rtn. John Rea, Rotary Club of Cairns Earlville, has agreed to take on the role of District Internet Communications Officer (DICO).

John is IT Manager for Cairns City Council and will undoubtedly bring a different perspective to the role than we have previously been accustomed to. However while the approach may be different, I have no doubt that John will make a valuable contribution to the District in his new capacity, with your full support.

º º º º º Gloria and I also achieved a significant milestone for the year with the completion of our official club visits at the end of October. While it is a welcome relief to have successfully completed such a challenging and intimidating visit program (and to be sleeping again in our own bed), we have been overwhelmed by the warmth and hospitality with which we were universally greeted.

You have made our official responsibilities such a personally rewarding experience that it is with real regret that these visits are now at an end. We extend our personal thanks and gratitude to you all.

COUNCIL on LEGISLATION

The forthcoming Council, 11-14 June, 2004 enables every Rotarian and each Rotary Club to have input into how they believe our Organization should be structured.

For Rotary International to maintain the tremendous gains in Membership and Direction that were accomplished recently, it is important that the Rules governing us should be representative of the times we live in.

The Council On Legislation meets every Four Years, and it is at this venue that changes are made to the way we do things. 530 Representatives from every District in the World will sit for a minimum of Four Days, and reach a decision on Proposed Resolutions and Enactments that have been submitted by Clubs, Districts and the Board of Rotary International.

Although it appears early to be concerned with these matters, all Legislation must be received at the RI Headquarters or the RI International Office serving our Area no later than 30 June 2003. It naturally follows that any Enactments or Resolutions submitted by our District have to be approved at the Cairns Conference May 2003.

With due regard to the approaching "Silly Season" we only have a few Months to give serious thought to changes we believe necessary. So if there is some improvement you want to make, some innovation that you feel will be beneficial, put your thoughts on paper, get your Clubs support, submit it to the District Resolution Officer Gary Gear and it will be dealt with at Dist. Conf. Looking forward to being of assistance,

COL Representative: PDG Frank Darveniza

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE APRIL/MAY, 2003

On the weekend of 1st November to 3rd November, 2002, team member selections were made for the Group Study Exchange to be held next year with District 2430 in Turkey.

Response to this year's exchange was great. We received 23 applications and short-listed these to interview 10 people.

The successful team consists of the following members:
- Team Leader Jan Johnson from the Rotary Club of Townsville Daybreak.

Team Members:
Simone Roseler 31 yrs old - PR/Event Manager Sponsored by Townsville Sunrise
Greg Brennen 34 yrs old - Police Officer Sponsored by Thuringowa Northern Beaches Brett Christofelz 29 yrs old - Pharmacist Sponsored by Fitzgerald Innisfail
Jennifer Phillips 33 yrs old - Intensive Care Nurse Sponsored by Townsville Sunrise
The reserve team member is Paula La Rosa who is 29 yrs old and works as a social worker with Centacare. Paula was nominated by Ross River.

The calibre of the applicants was outstanding and the final decision was difficult and very close between the applicants. I would like to thank all the Group representatives who have taken the time to advertise and promote this year's GSE and interview the applicants prior to the final selection.

In particular a big thanks to Bruce Nicholls from Zone 6 and Joe Bertello from Zone 7 who assisted with the selection weekend.

Planning will begin soon for the itinerary for the Turkish team visiting our district in April/May, 2003

Dear Garry,

Me again. Just got off the phone from talking to Rupert Crossland.

He is home recovering. He had 3 heart bypasses done in Townsville 10 days ago and is doing well. He says as soon as he has sufficiently recovered he will be coming back to Rotary. Regards,

Ted

More funds needed for Bali bomb victims

Within hours of the Bali bombing, the Rotary Club Bali Kuta Crisis Committee started collecting funds for medical supplies at the Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar.

In light of the many areas in need of attention, the Rotary Club and volunteers have elected to focus on the victims' families.

The Rotary Club Bali Kuta Crisis Committee is made up of several Rotarians and volunteers who witnessed directly the chaotic and disordered situation at the severely affected site a few hours after the bombing.

And "The Rotary Club Bali Kuta Crisis Committee" has been set up with the objective of raising funds and giving moral support for the victims' families.
