Dear Fellow
Rotarians
For the first time in two weeks I have
opened my email messages to catch up.
Once again I am reminded of the true
message of Rotary. Caring for others regardless of their situation,
whether they be foster parents/children, polio sufferers, young
displaced persons, cancer sufferers, those who can't afford food
for their families, young people who want to experience life through
a Rotary exchange, or Rotary members who have lost a loved one.
It's no wonder that I enjoy the company,
and opportunities which Rotary provides for me. You have truly been
our Rotary family! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your
kind thoughts, beautiful flowers, attendance at Bruce's funeral
and general support for my family.
Bruce was a very special person, he
is largely responsible for my Rotary membership, he knew that the
Rotary fellowship and goodwill was an important part of my life.
He encouraged me in every possible way to participate fully in Rotary
activities, even when he must have missed my company.
He was so proud to receive the message
from John Quinn about the raffle tickets sold at Pt Douglas, and
this was the day before he had a stroke.
Belinda, Megan and I have received
so much at this sad time. I have renewed spirit and look forward
to supporting others as needed.
Thank You
Ann

OCTOBER is VOCATIONAL SERVICE
MONTH!
Vocational Service is often thought of in Rotary
Clubs as the forgotten service, with incoming Vocational Service
Directors frequently wondering what their role is for the year ahead.
In fact, Vocational Service is the backbone of
Rotary, from the vocational classification system upon which each
club is based, to the maintenance of high ethical standards in everything
we do as Rotarians.
Indeed, each and every Rotarian performs vocational
service every day of our lives through the way in which we conduct
ourselves in our businesses and professions, and through the example
we set for others using the Four-Way Test and the Declaration for
Rotarians in Businesses and Professions (p75 MOP).
Vocational Service Chair John Bearne has set out
many of the programs available under Vocational Service in his report
for this month's newsletter. You will note that many of these programs
focus on our youth or on the encouragement of greater pride and
workmanship in the workplace - certainly activities that "Sow the
Seeds of Love".
Use this month to concentrate on the activities
available under vocational service, but use every day as an opportunity
to serve within our vocations and throughout the community.
º º º º º All District 9550 Rotarians should now
be aware that the date for the formal handover of the Charter for
the Rotary Club of Dili has now been set as 30 November 2002. Considerable
interest has been shown from around Australia in this special occasion,
but many of our southern Rotarians are also now discovering the
realities associated with travel in Northern Australia with respect
to the cost and frequency of available flights, which is unfortunately
likely to curtail their attendance.
However many Darwin/NT Rotarians will be there
in force, with plans in hand for special charter flights from Darwin
to Dili to facilitate the event. Gloria and I are certainly looking
forward with great anticipation to celebrating this significant
event for East Timor and our District with our fellow Dili Rotarians.
º º º º º In the course of my official club visits,
I am noticing that there has been little contact between the individual
club service directors, and their respective district counterparts.
To facilitate communication between the Chairs and
the Clubs, I would ask club directors to immediately forward their
email contact address directly to the associated District Chair,
as follows:
Club Service Chair Jim Lonergan
ClubChair@d9550.rotary.org.au
Vocational Service Chair John Bearne
VocChair@d9550.rotary.org.au
Community Service Chair David
Kirchner
CommChair@d9550.rotary.org.au
At this stage, communication with the remaining
District Chairs appears to be reasonably effective via the respective
Group Representatives.
º º º º º I am pleased to see that the new attendance
reporting procedures/options implemented for this Rotary year are
also proving to be effective, however I note with some concern that
there are still many clubs who do not seem to be capable of reporting
their attendance and membership details in accordance with their
obligations.
The monthly reporting of these details is surely
not an onerous task beyond the capability of leading business and
professional people, yet many are seemingly unable to do this.
There are also many new members in the clubs (some
of whom I have been privileged to induct during my visits) whose
details have not yet been forwarded to District Secretary David
Court. Club Membership and attendance are key indicators of a district's
performance and the District Officers require updated and accurate
information for management of the District. Please ensure that your
club is complying with its requirements on a regular monthly basis.
º º º º º In closing, I am pleased to advise that
Rtn. Sandy Astill has agreed to undertake the role of District
Governor's Newsletter Editor for the balance of the Rotary year.
I look forward to working with Sandy on the preparation
of our future newsletters and ask all clubs to support her in this
role with contributions of interest to the District.

Rotary International District 9550, 2002-2003
