President's Message

27TH SEPTEMBER 2002

Last Friday we enjoyed a very relaxed meeting with a minimum of Club business and lots of fellowship. The number of guests and visitors almost outnumbered the members at the meeting. In the circumstances it was not appropriate to hold any open discussion on the recent survey of Club members preferences for future community service commitments, so we will hold that discussion over for a Club Forum meeting to be held as soon as the schedule allows. Please be prepared to contribute at that meeting.

This week we are privileged to have PDG Graham Cossins as our guest speaker. Graham will talk to us on his and Margaret's recent expedition to the fossil dig in outback Queensland. It should be an enjoyable and interesting meeting so please make it to the new meeting venue this week - downstairs at the Hilton Hotel (previously Ribbons Nightclub). Please try to be there in time for a prompt 1.00pm start as we are on limited time for our meetings.

Whilst Cheryl Williams is off overseas in India, Bev Cheeseman has prepared a roster for Club Members setting out the dates for the one or two occasions during the Rotary year when each Member is responsible for hosting our exchange students for an outing or a weekend activity. Steve Baker will publish the roster in the bulletin in full, and then each week we also publish the coming months roster so that members are aware of their responsibilities.

The Rotary Community Car Art Union is progressing well, thanks to the dedicated efforts of John Quinn, Herman Ehrlich and David Kirchner. Thank you to those Members and supporters who continue to work hard to bring this project to a successful conclusion. We have entered into an arrangement with Smithfield Shopping Centre to sell our tickets in the Centre and display the prize car at the same time.

John Quinn reports that we are currently selling 12-15 books of tickets per day, which gives us approximately 60 books ($ 1200) per week. This is a gratifying outcome and our sincere thanks go to those members and their families who have committed to helping out on the roster at Smithfield Shopping Centre. Many thanks to David Kirchner for his initiative in organizing a ticket selling post at the Festival Cairns procession on Saturday.

I understand that 30 odd books of tickets were sold which was a great effort. Herman and John will continue to contact everyone to ask for your assistance in doing one shift at Smithfield Shopping Centre to help clear the remaining tickets. Whilst this project is not every members "cup of tea" please help out by committing to this worthwhile community service project - it only requires a couple of hours of your time. And remember, if you have sold your quota of tickets then please return the ticket butts and money to John or Herman urgently. If you cannot, or are determined not to, help out by doing a shift then please at least but a book of tickets in the Art Union.

Congratulations and a huge thank you to Gina Raccanello for her outstanding effort in organizing the Club Feature that appeared in the Cairns Post yesterday as part of Rotary Awareness Week. This provides wonderful exposure for the Club and for Rotary, and hopefully we will see some expressions of interest from prospective members as a result of the hard work that Gina has put into the feature.

Any members who are considering attending the RI International Convention in Brisbane on 1st - 4th June 2003 should attend to your accommodation bookings as soon as possible. Joanne has already experienced considerable difficulty in securing our accommodation and with some 25000 people expected to attend, it will only get worse. So get your Convention Registration Forms from Secretary Michael Plunkett as soon as possible to make sure that you do not miss out on this unique opportunity.

That's about it for this week. See you all at the Hilton at 12.30pm for 1.00pm - remember the parking arrangements.

Take care of each other, and be sure to talk to someone about Rotary this week.

SEPTEMBER is NEW GENERATIONS MONTH!

RI President Bhichai Rattakul, in his recent letter to all Rotarians, commented that "one year ago, the world changed forever with the attacks of September 11 in New York City, U.S.A."

He went on to say that "the anniversary of September 11 should not only be a day of remembrance, but also a day of promise" and that, "together, we will Sow the Seeds of Love to realise our dream for a more peaceful world."

On September 11 2002, Rotary in District 9550 did make a new beginning with the official chartering of the Rotary Club of Dili, East Timor, following the signing by President Bhichai of the Club's Charter Certificate.

This act also marked the extension of Rotary to East Timor (making it the 164th Rotary country in the world), and the inclusion of East Timor as part of District 9550.

Gloria and I were privileged to travel to Dili on 12 and 13 September to convey this information personally to Charter President David Boyce and the 32 charter members of the new club. A date for formal handover for the charter certificate to the club is still being finally resolved but is expected to take place prior to the end of November 2002.

Congratulations must also go to PDG's Frank Darveniza and Terry Lees, and to the sponsor Rotary Club of Darwin and DG's Special Representative Ray Fauntleroy, for their persistence and hard work in support of the new club over a considerable period of time.

September 23 to 29 is Rotary Awareness week in Australasia and all clubs should be taking the opportunity to promote Rotary and its achievements in our community.

The District will also shortly be receiving posters via ACAP for promotion of the Polio Eradication campaign. I urge all clubs to take this opportunity to maximise promotion of community awareness of the Polio Eradication campaign and of Rotary in general.

º º º º º To commemorate New Generations Month in September, President Bhichai has stated that "we must support programs that will provide a better future for our youth.

The next generation holds the key to resolving the conflicts of today. Rotary World Peace Scholars, Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotary Volunteers, Youth Exchange students and Group Study Exchange teams all contribute to world understanding."

Focusing on our youth, through promotion of programs such as Interact, Rotaract, etc, also assists in training and developing future Rotarians. While our senior Rotarians are no less valuable to day (on the contrary, their experience, wisdom and knowledge is often invaluable), we need to regenerate Rotary in our District by bringing in new, and where appropriate younger, Rotarians to maintain the community representation and vitality of Rotary. As in any organisation, unless we focus on support of the New Generation, we may not have a future! º º º º º

Finally, it is with much regret that I announce the resignation of Darryl and Cathy McKeller from Rotary. Darryl and Cathy have been tireless workers for Rotary, and through their thoughtful and constructive questioning of the status quo, have been instrumental in introducing many improvements in training and communications to the District.

Their contribution as District Internet Communications Officer and DG Newsletter Editor, respectively, over the past 4 years will be sorely missed. On behalf of all Rotarians, we wish them well and sincerely hope that they may see their way clear to rejoin Rotary at some future time.

APPOINTMENT OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2004-05

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Trevor Williams of the Rotary Club of Home Hill as District Governor Nominee. Trevor will be Governor of District 9550 during 2004/2005.

He and Margaret will attend the Rotary International Zone 7 & 8 Institute in Adelaide in November. This will formally commence the training process that Trevor will undergo during the next three years.

Congratulations Trevor and best wishes to yourself and Margaret. Gloria and I are sure that you will find these next few years as rewarding and fulfilling as we have.
