Sean Connery, except as James Bond does nothing for me. He’s just not interesting. He’s like a big, hairy, slurring, moving, ordinary cupboard. In Finding Forrester he plays a reclusive writer called William Forrester who strikes up a literary relationship with a 16 year old boy from the Bronx called Jamal played by a very impressive newcomer called Rob Brown. Rob Brown who with a bit of luck could become the next Denzel Washington. He has that air about him. Let’s hope he gets given a class role similar to the one Denzel got when he was offered Glory. Jamal plays good basketball and can also write beautifully for his age. He wins a scholarship to a posh white school and Forrester secretly provides writing tuition. There’s a fair bit of fairly entertaining basketball if that’s of interest to you and young Brown really can play! Anna Paquin (The Piano, X Men, Fly Away Home) is delightful as the rich white white girl and F Murray Abraham (Salieri in Amadeus) a bit of a pain, as required as the Professor. Finding Forrester follows the usual plot line for these sorts of film with only one or two half surprising plot twist. Sean Connery is a bore but Rob Brown just about makes up for him. The one really high point was when a photograph of a young Forrester is shown and it’s James Bond! Clever fellows these Scottish writers. 3 Bookworm Flys. |
