Children Of The Marshland
This charming little film set in amongst a community
living on the banks of the Loire river in France between
the two great wars has the air of many of these
provincial French movies.
A drifter wanders in from the first war to join with
the people who live in Marshlands near a small town.
These people are "paupers with pride, otherwise we are
deadbeats."
He becomes friendly with a grog soaked father of
three and together they tie the ends together doing
odd jobs and chatting. An estranged rich neighbour
rediscovers the joys of catching frogs. A bar room brawl
is finally decided by an act of supreme kindness.
The story has a nostalgic feel, one where memories of
unpleasantnesshave faded leaving the sweet, sometimes
bitter sweet recollections our minds choose to store to
tell to our children and friends many years later.
Les Enfants Du Marais received nominations for Best
Film, Director, Sound, Music and Supporting Actor at
the 2000 Cesars, the Premier French Film awards.
