Bring It On

Cheer Leading is pretty weird, at least for Australians. We had a dose of cheer leading inflicted upon us in Cairns about five years ago when two American Football teams came here to show their wares.

Adenoidal teenage girls swinging their underwear skywards does have some appeal I suppose but I reckon that anyone who can't get a kick on a football field should bloody well stay off! So there!

And I don't think that we Aussies were too impressive in those girl's eye's either, at least as far as cheerleading goes. Try to get an Australian crowd to respond to stupid chants - and see what I mean. Aussies don't cheer - much.

Anyway Bring It On is about two teams battling it out, the blacks against the whites to win the National Cheerleading Championships. Kirsten Dunst (the little girl vampire who wanted more blood in Interview With A Vampire) as Tori leads one mob and Gabrielle Union as Isis (She's All That!) the other.

It seems that the rich white girls team has been stealing the (financially) poor black girl's teams routines and have thus won the championship five times running.

Unfortunately this year the black team have raised the dough, are coming and the game will be up! Actually not much is made of the race issue but there it is anyway. You can't ignore it. Tori is basically a fair player and will try to make amends. Isis and her team have a hot team and just might win.

A sub plot is provided by Tori falling for surly Cliff (Jessy Bradford) who is Missy's brother. Missy is played by Eliza Dushku (Faith in Buffy on TV).

Bring It On is mostly belly buttons, underwear and gymnastic cheer leader routines. There's an ending patina of wholesomeness but like most of these teen films Bring It On is overwhelmingly about posturing, nasty put downs and taking the PG rating as close to R as possible.

And as for Kirsten Dunst, well she should have sucked more blood years ago. She's far too skinny to be my dream cheerleader.
