Besieged

Besieged is a love story with a difference. As you would expect from Bernardo Bertolucci, this movie is visually stunning. Each frame is designed to be a treat.
Shandurai (Thandie Newton) escapes from trying circumstances in an African country to become a medical student in Rome.
She becomes the housekeeper for Mr Kinski (English actor David Thewlis) and gradually they become attracted to one another, even while Shandurai is desperately trying to get her beloved husband out of her home country.
Mr Kinski is a virtuoso pianist and composer. Thewlis gives a sensitive performance.
Newton as Shandurai is a delight with the real pleasure being the details of settings and character.
Besieged takes its time as it slowly builds to its surprising climax.
